The word “Buddies” is used in several organizations that work with individuals with intellectual disabilities. I love the use of the name and think it is great because it has become a somewhat universal reference. People hear it and while they may not know exactly what the program/organization is about, they at least know the population it involves. As we start off the new year, I want to help clarify and separate some of the “Buddies” programs.
Best Buddies: Best Buddies is a non-profit organization started by Anthony Shriver that fosters one-to-one friendships and helps create employment and leadership opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. For the past two years, we have formed a team (TeamFITBuddies) and have supported Best Buddies by participating in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle.
Buddies In ACTION: Buddies In ACTION encompasses all the services, programs, and volunteer projects that I am working on. Buddies In ACTION stands for my effort to create Awareness, build Confidence, Train the Athlete in EveryBuddy, build Independence, create Opportunities, and improve the Nutrition and overall health & wellness of this special population: inside and outside of the gym.
FITBuddies: FITBuddies is a part of Buddies In ACTION. It is one of the programs Buddies In ACTION currently offers. It is currently the main program I am offering. FITBuddies is professional small group training for individuals with intellectual disabilities that focuses on all areas of fitness in a fun and safe environment. It is also about providing this opportunity in a setting where the kids/adults are included and a part of the entire gym community.
